Blinken and Cameron demand the approval of aid to Ukraine

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron called on the US Congress to approve new military aid to Ukraine, saying the funding is critical to the security of the US, Europe and the world.

Speaking after the meeting at the State Department, Blinken repeated calls for lawmakers to unblock the aid that President Joe Biden has been seeking for months, while Cameron said he would seek the same during meetings in Washington.

"I come here with no intention of lecturing anyone, or telling anyone what to do... I simply come here as a friend and as a great believer in this country. I believe it is deeply in your interest to unlock that money," Cameron said.

Multiple foreign officials have urged US lawmakers to act quickly to approve aid to Ukraine.

Last week in Brussels, almost all foreign ministers of NATO member countries said that the contribution of the US is essential.

The new $60 billion aid package for Ukraine has been blocked in the US Congress for months, largely because of Republican lawmakers who support former President Donald Trump.

The latter is expected to run for president again in the November elections and has repeatedly expressed reservations about aid given to Ukraine, which is fighting against Russian occupation.

In an interview with Fox News earlier this month, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, said he wants new aid to Ukraine approved "now" and said he would propose a package soon after Congress returns from recess on April 9.

Johnson, a Trump ally, said his proposal would include "significant innovations" but did not outline them.

The package that remains blocked provides funds mainly for weapons and other military equipment./ Rel
