Australia: We can recognize the Palestinian state

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said her country could recognize Palestinian citizenship.

However, Hamas - designated a terrorist group by the US and other powers - could have no role in governing that country, she said.

Both Australia's opposition and the Zionist Federation of Australia say such a move would be premature.

But Canberra has long said that recognition of a Palestinian state can only come as part of a two-state solution brokered with Israel.

Wong said the two-state solution - under which Israelis and Palestinians would live side by side in separate countries - is "the only hope to break the endless cycle of violence".

Israel has launched a fierce campaign of attacks in Gaza - the enclave inhabited by Palestinians - since Hamas attacked its territory in October, killing more than 1,200 people and taking hundreds more hostage.

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry says more than 33,000 Gazans have been killed since Israel launched the offensive.

Large parts of the territory have been destroyed and many of the inhabitants are suffering from hunger.

About 140 countries recognize Palestinian citizenship, but many others, including the US, UK, Germany and Australia do not.

The United Nations will discuss this week to grant Palestine - which is currently an "observer state" - full membership in this international organization./ Rel
