An explosion occurred around 15:00 today at a hydroelectric plant in the artificial lake of Suviana, in the Bolognese Apennines.

As a result of the underwater explosion, 3 people lost their lives, 3 were severely burned and 6 other people were declared missing.

Investigations are being carried out by the police and fire brigade. The accident happened below the water level, there is a lot of smoke and it is very difficult for firefighters to enter the area.

The mayor of Bologna, Marco Masinara, declared that the fire broke out on the minus-ninth floor.

"There was an explosion on the minus-ninth floor, the entire power plant is below the level of the lake at a depth of about 30 meters.

I was told that the firemen are trying to get in, but they are having trouble. From what they tell me, the explosion started inside the Enel power plant, it seems that there was a problem with a turbine", added the mayor.

He specified that the explosion occurred "inside a historic building, which had been operating for decades" and that this building was always well controlled.

"In order to provide help, visibility and low temperatures are needed," explained the provincial commander of the Bologna fire department, Calogero Turturici.

"When we get to the level of the accident we will understand better. Even after contacting the manager of the Enel plant", he added.

"The fire apparently fell on the 9th floor, where the transformers are located. At the moment, it is impossible to understand the causes of the accident, for which the testimonies of those who were at the scene will be essential.

The power plant is currently submerged in water, rescue operations are not possible, let alone inspections to understand what happened," said Turturici. / CNA
