The Vatican Press Office has issued an announcement regarding the health condition of Pope Francis.
The announcement states that the Holy Father has suffered acute respiratory failure twice, as a result of bronchospasm and mucus accumulation.
For this reason, Pope Francis underwent two bronchoscopies to remove the numerous secretions. In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed.
" Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory failure, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm.
Therefore, two bronchoscopies were performed, with the need to remove large secretions.
In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. The Holy Father remained alert, oriented and cooperative at all times ,” the statement said.
Pope Francis has been at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome since February 14, when he was admitted due to pneumonia./ CNA
