Starmer wants to work with France on a peace plan

Britain wants to work with France on a peace plan for Ukraine. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has repeated his call for US security guarantees for a European peacekeeping force.

British Prime Minister Starmer told the BBC shortly before the start of a summit on Ukraine in London that other countries could be included in the plan to end the fighting. The plan would then be discussed with the US.

Starmer: European peacekeeping force needs US protection

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has repeated his call for US guarantees to prevent Russia from re-invading Ukraine after a possible peace deal. The US would be expected to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, as European capabilities are insufficient.

According to Starmer, some kind of American security is needed for a peace agreement to work. Only in this way can a European peacekeeping force for Ukraine provide security guarantees.

"I don't think there's any guarantee without that," Starmer told the BBC. The British prime minister stressed that he believes US President Trump also wants lasting peace. Let's bridge the gap and get back to the main topic

Starmer stressed that he wanted to form a "coalition of the willing" to outline concrete European security guarantees for Ukraine. He said he did not want to criticize anyone, but that this was better than expecting every single country in Europe to do the same.

Regarding the White House scandal between Zelensky and Trump, Starmer said: "This is something no one wants to see." That's why he had picked up the phone and spoken to those involved. "My motivation was, so to speak, to bridge the gap and get back to the main topic," he said.

EU and NATO leaders are meeting in London this afternoon to discuss Ukraine. Among those attending are German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary General Marc Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky./ DW
