Possible Israel-Hamas ceasefire/Second phase of talks begins

Talks began today in Egypt for the second phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, the first phase of which ends on Saturday.

Officials from Israel joined mediators from Qatar and the United States in Cairo on Thursday for intensive discussions, according to Egypt's state information service.

The talks for the second phase of the ceasefire aim to negotiate a complete end to the war, including the return of all remaining captives in Gaza and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the territory.

According to Israel, 59 prisoners remain in Gaza, 24 of whom are believed to still be alive.

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said an Israeli delegation has traveled to Egypt to see if there is enough common ground to negotiate an extension of the agreement.

Hours before the talks began, an Israeli official said the country would not withdraw from a strategic corridor in the Gaza Strip as required under the ceasefire, a refusal that could severely complicate negotiations with Hamas and key mediator Egypt at a sensitive moment for the fragile ceasefire.

US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected in the region in the coming days./CNA
