Records Revealed/ Ship in Greece May Have Been Sunk by Coast Guard

Audio instructions revealed by Greek rescue coordinators have cast further doubt on Greece's official version of events in the hours before a migrant boat sank with up to 650 people on board.

The Adriana sank in the early hours of June 14, 2023 in international waters, but within Greece's rescue zone, after leaving Libya days earlier.

Survivors later told the BBC that the coastguard had caused their overcrowded fishing boat to capsize in a failed attempt to tow it away and then forced witnesses to silence.

The Greek coast guard denied these claims and claims that it did not try to rescue those on board because they were not in danger and said they had voluntarily wanted to reach Italy, not Greece.

But in a phone call that has now emerged, an unidentified man speaking from inside a Greek rescue coordination center is heard instructing the captain of the migrant boat to tell an approaching ship that those on board do not want to reach Greece.

The Coast Guard has not commented on the audio, but said it had submitted all available evidence to the Maritime Court which is investigating the disaster. /CNA
