The war in Ukraine/ Zelensky: I hope it will end this year

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that he hopes the war can be ended "this year" on the third anniversary of Russia's full invasion.

But he warned that Ukraine needs security guarantees to prevent Moscow's return, suggesting that membership in the EU and NATO would help. Russia has consistently opposed the idea of ??Ukraine joining NATO.

Earlier, Zelensky said that a peace agreement with Russia could begin with a "full" exchange of prisoners of war.

Zelensky was speaking at a summit of European leaders, plus Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who were in Kiev to show their support.

Speaking at a press conference, Zelensky was asked what his hopes were for Ukraine and its people after three years of war.

"We hope we can end the war this year," he replied, adding that it has been "very difficult" for the entire nation.

In the short term, he said Ukraine needed security guarantees to prevent a Russian comeback in the years to come.

EU and NATO membership would soon "help us a lot," he added.

Zelensky recently said he would be willing to step down as president if Ukraine became a member of NATO in exchange. Russia said it would not accept that as part of any peace deal./CNA
