Trump wants to meet with Zelensky soon

Following the adoption of a Moscow-friendly resolution regarding Ukraine by the Security Council, President Trump wants to meet with Zelensky soon.

US President Donald Trump said he wants to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week or next week. Trump said the deal would allow the US to exploit Ukraine's mineral resources, an agreement that Zelensky wants to sign in person. "We're very close to a deal," Trump said. "We're helping Ukraine like never before," the US president said. Trump said he doesn't want the war in Ukraine to escalate into World War III.

Putin: Europeans can participate in Ukraine talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that European countries could play a role in possible negotiations to resolve the Ukraine conflict. "Europeans, but also other countries, have the right and the opportunity to participate in these talks - and we respect that," Russian President Putin said in a television interview.

The Russian president also offered the United States joint exploitation of rare mineral reserves found in the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. "We are ready to work with our partners there, including the United States," Putin said in an interview with state television.

SC adopts Moscow-friendly resolution on Ukraine

The UN Security Council voted in favor of a resolution on Ukraine, submitted by the US administration of President Donald Trump. The statement, which does not describe Russia as the aggressor, received 10 votes out of the 15 members of the Security Council, thus achieving the necessary majority in the most powerful UN body.

The four EU member states currently on the UN Security Council - Denmark, France, Greece and Slovenia - as well as the UK abstained. Previous attempts to change the resolution failed. Russia, for example, vetoed the Europeans' attempt to add a paragraph on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity to the US-sponsored draft resolution./ DW
