Germans head to the ballot boxes/Merz leads in preliminary polls

Germany votes today in snap elections being held after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party governing coalition last November.

Germans will choose between current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, from the center-left Social Democrats, Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union, Robert Habeck, from the Greens, and Alice Weidel of the far-right party.

The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/Christian Social Union (CSU) coalition under Friedrich Merz is ahead in the polls.

Merz vowed to be a strong voice in Europe at the CDU's final rally before the vote.

Polls put the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in second place. No party has expressed a willingness to form a coalition with the AfD.

The ruling Social Democrats (SPD) under current Chancellor Scholz came in third place. That makes them a potential coalition partner for the CDU. The Greens are another possible alternative.

In Germany, there are more than 59 million citizens with the right to vote, who will elect the 630 members of the lower house of parliament, known as the Bundestag./ CNA
