Sunday's elections in Germany/ What to expect according to preliminary

On Sunday, February 23, Germans will be called to the ballot boxes to elect the 630 deputies who will sit in the Bundestag.

Amid a tense political backdrop, marked by polls favoring the far right, Germany's snap parliamentary elections will serve to test the new proportional representation system established last July.

These elections came after two regional elections brought results that were not very favorable to the parties in Chancellor Olaf Scholz's former coalition, which had been composed of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens, and the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP).

The right, represented by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU, together with its Bavarian partner, the CSU), has come out on top, with around 30% of the vote, according to a general average of polls. Since the summer of 2024, the far-right AfD has been in second place behind the SPD, which has fallen to third place. The Greens, who briefly held second place in the polls in the summer of 2022, have recently fallen to fourth place in the polls./CNA
