Air pollution alarm in Macedonia/ Mortality rate increases

According to reports from the European Commission (EC) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, North Macedonia has a high mortality rate due to air pollution.

In North Macedonia, on average, 3,400 people die each year from air pollution. This is according to a recent study by the UNDP and Goce Delchev University.

Skopje residents have been breathing dangerous air for years. The capital is at the top of the list of the most polluted cities in the world. The concentration of health-damaging particles in Skopje is 14 times higher than the annual World Health Organization air quality guidelines. Several UNDP studies show that the main sources of ambient air pollution are households and public buildings heated with fossil fuels.

In North Macedonia, the risks from air pollution are particularly high. In February 2024, Skopje was once again among the 10 most polluted cities in the world, with PM10 or PM2.5 levels, on average, exceeding thresholds for more than 100 days per year.

In addition to being a significant cause of infant deaths, new data shows that air pollution causes more healthy years of life lost than any other environmental factor, including high temperatures, unsafe water and poor sanitation
