Elections in Germany/ An important race for the country and Europe

This Sunday, February 23, Germany will hold parliamentary elections. These are important elections not only for Europe's leading economy, but also for the entire EU and the Old Continent, including Ukraine.

Immigration control and the revival of the European Union's largest economy are the main issues in these snap elections.

This election is taking place against a backdrop of a series of deadly attacks that have increased pressure on the main parties to reform immigration and asylum rules.

Germans were already reeling from four fatal attacks, in Mannheim, Solingen, Magdeburg and Afschaffenburg, when a mother and her two-year-old daughter were fatally injured in a car attack in Munich, allegedly by an Afghan national, 10 days before the election.

Who will be the next Chancellor of Germany?

When voters cast their ballots on February 23, 2025, they will not directly elect the next German chancellor. Instead, they will elect politicians in the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament. If a party does not win an outright majority, the party with the most representatives in the Bundestag tries to build a governing coalition. Such coalitions usually hold a parliamentary majority, with modern-day Germany having only had minority governments twice, in 1966 and 1982. Usually, the party with the most votes in a governing coalition nominates its declared candidate for chancellor to lead the government./ CNA
