US-Russia meeting in Riyadh ends/ Negotiations on Ukraine to begin soon

Senior American and Russian officials wrapped up their first talks on ending the war in Ukraine, as Washington and Moscow agreed to move quickly to normalize their ties and begin negotiations over the nearly three-year-old conflict.

The more than four-hour meeting in Riyadh, which was attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, is part of a major diplomatic push by the United States to end the war.

The discussions were described by US officials as exploratory talks that could pave the way for a possible in-person meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Rubio told reporters after the meeting the talks were "the first step of a long and difficult journey" to end the war in Ukraine and that the US and Russian delegations agreed on four principles during their discussions.

Lavrov called the meeting "very useful" and said Moscow will aim to appoint a special envoy as soon as possible.

The United States and Russia also decided to appoint high-level teams to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine and are working to restore diplomatic channels./CNA
