US Secretary of State Rubio visits Saudi Arabia/Details from multilateral discussions

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is holding meetings in Saudi Arabia to discuss President Donald Trump's relocation and redevelopment plans for the Gaza Strip and to meet with Russian counterparts on steps to end the war in Ukraine.

This is Rubio's first visit to the Middle East as secretary of state and began with a stop in Israel, where his team called for the start of negotiations for a second phase of the Gaza ceasefire.

Today, Israel sent a delegation to Cairo to prepare for those talks, just two weeks before the current ceasefire ends. Under the ceasefire agreement, which began on January 19, talks for the second phase were to begin on February 3.

Rubio's meetings in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates come as both countries position themselves as mediators between the United States and Russia./CNA
