Etna volcano erupts again / Concern for residents and travel in Sicily

Mount Etna, the highest and most active volcano in Europe, is currently erupting, leaving residents and travelers heading to the Italian island of Sicily worried.

The latest eruption began on February 11 and is still ongoing, sending a plume of ash and lava into the air visible for miles around. The eruption is from the volcano's southeastern crater, called Bocca Nuova, which means 'new mouth.'

A 3 km long lava river is flowing from the crater.

Meanwhile, Catania airport sits at the foot of Mount Etna, with views of the volcanic mountain. The airport remains open, but passengers are advised to check the status of their flights. On February 12, part of Catania airport was closed due to reduced visibility from ash.

This situation, although repeated, has created fear among residents and travelers, due to the close distance to residential areas. /CNA
