$25,000 for LGBT+ refugees in Greece?!/ Elon Musk cuts off US fund

The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Elon Musk-led agency tasked with reducing government spending, announced on X that it had halted a $25,000 award intended to support LGBTQ refugees in Greece.

“During the review, the team identified a $25,000 grant titled ‘Empowering LGBTQ+ Refugees in Greece’ with the description: ‘To provide material, legal, and psychological support to LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees; inform and raise awareness in civil society about issues facing the LGBTQ+ community.’ It has now been canceled,” the DOGE post on X reads.

The announcement followed a letter from Emanouil Fragkos, an MEP from the Greek nationalist Solution party, who asked Musk to investigate DOGE’s “US funding of Greek NGOs that book luxury hotels for illegal migrants.” Fragkos retweeted DOGE’s post, writing “Catharsis, we bring change.”

According to USAspending, the official open data source for federal spending information, the recipient of the amount, which was awarded through the US Embassy in Athens, received the full amount in September 2024, meaning the cancellation only affects funding for 2025. /CNA
