Anti-mafia operation in Italy/ 180 Cosa Nostra members arrested

Italian police today organized a major operation, which led to the arrest of 180 suspected members of Cosa Nostra.

The arrested are accused, to varying degrees, of mafia-type criminal organization, attempted murder, extortion, committed or attempted, aggravated by mafia methods, association for the purpose of illegal drug trafficking, crimes against property, crimes against the person and illegal gambling.

The investigation by investigators in Palermo, regarding an attempt by the mafia syndicate to rebuild in the area of ??the Sicilian capital, after a series of austerity measures in recent years that sent thousands of members to prison.

The main districts involved in the investigation are those of Santa Maria di Gesù, Porta Nuova, San Lorenzo, Bagheria, Terrasini, Pagliarelli and Carini.

Among other things, the investigation revealed that imprisoned mafia bosses have been able to continue coordinating criminal activities, including drug trafficking and mafia meetings, from prison thanks to micro-SIM cards and encrypted mobile phones illegally smuggled into their cells.

The investigations revealed the new system with which the bosses met to reorganize the new provincial commission, already wiped out once and for all with the arrests in December 2018.

Some of the arrested mobsters were ready to go into hiding. Boss Nunzio Serio's brother-in-law, for example, after finding a GPS on his wife's Smart and fearing that a court order would soon be issued for him, left Palermo to flee north. "We are all being bombed," he said. /CNA
