Trump nominee Tulsi Gabbard elected as director of national intelligence

The U.S. Senate has voted to confirm President Trump's nominee, Tulsi Gabbard, to serve as the country's top intelligence official. Gabbard is now the country's top intelligence official.

The former Democratic congresswoman was approved to oversee U.S. agencies by a majority vote of 52 to 48. Her confirmation marks another cabinet victory for Trump as the Senate moves quickly to confirm his remaining nominees.

As director, Gabbard will oversee 18 intelligence agencies including the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency (NSA) and manage a budget of more than $70 billion (£55 billion).

Who is Tulsi Gabbard?

Tulsi Gabbard (born April 12, 1981) is a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve, an American politician, and the appointed Director of National Intelligence.

Gabbard served as the U.S. Representative for Hawaii's 2nd congressional district from 2013 to 2021. She also served as Hawaii's youngest state legislator from 2002 to 2004. She was a candidate in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. She left the Democratic Party in 2022 to become an independent.

In 2024, she joined the Republican Party. In November 2024, President-elect Donald Trump selected Gabbard to serve as director of national intelligence for his second term. /CNA
