Other earthquakes on the islands in Greece/ What seismologists warn about

Earthquakes continue to hit the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, with more than 18,400 earthquakes recorded on the islands in recent days alone.

The most powerful earthquake to occur in the last 24 hours was of magnitude 5.1 and struck an area of ??the sea between the Greek islands of Amorgos and Santorini on Monday morning, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.

The tremors occurred shortly before 10 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located 21 kilometers southwest of Arkesini in the south of Amorgos, at a depth of 15 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but the earthquake was felt in several parts of the Cyclades, raising concerns among residents and local authorities.

Seismologists continue to monitor the area for possible aftershocks.

Gerasimos Papadopoulos, a seismologist at the Hellenic Mediterranean University, warns that a stronger earthquake is likely, but dismisses the possibility of a catastrophic event like the 1956 Amorgos earthquake.

Papadopoulos describes the recent seismic activity as "developing intensely, especially over the past weekend." He points to key indicators that suggest "for at least the last 48 hours, we've been in a clear sequence of foreshocks." /CNA
