Rubio-Lavrov phone conversation/ Agreement on issues of peace and diplomacy

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, following up on President Donald Trump's conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12.

Secretary Rubio was joined by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy Ambassador Steve Witkoff, the team selected by President Trump to restore bilateral relations. Foreign Minister Lavrov was joined by Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov.

President Trump and the United States want peace and are using their power in the world to bring countries together. President Trump is the only leader in the world who can get Ukraine and Russia to agree to this.

From this conversation it was agreed that:

-Establishing a consultation mechanism to address irritants in our bilateral relations with the objective of taking the necessary steps to normalize the functioning of our respective diplomatic missions.

-Appointment of relevant high-level teams to begin work on a path to end the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible in a manner that is sustainable, lasting and acceptable to all parties.

-Laying the foundations for future cooperation on issues of mutual geopolitical interest and the historic economic and investment opportunities that will arise from a successful conclusion to the conflict in Ukraine.

-The parties in today's meetings pledge to remain committed to ensuring that the process moves forward in a timely and productive manner.
