Floods in Greece / Residents stranded on the island of Kefalonia

It has been a difficult weekend for the residents of the Greek island of Kefalonia.

Heavy rainfall led to severe flooding and landslides across the island. Total rainfall exceeded 150 mm over two days, causing extensive damage.

The southern region bore the brunt of the storm, with tons of mud blocking roads and forcing firefighters to launch rescue operations for people trapped in their cars.

Weather stations across the island recorded significant rainfall by 18:30 local time, with the Argostoli area reaching 145 mm and the Skala-Poros region reaching 110 mm.

"The water almost entered the house. We tried to stop it with what we had, but the intensity of the rain was unprecedented," said a resident of the area, expressing concern about the extensive material damage.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation amid warnings of further deterioration of the weather in the coming hours. /CNA
