The Prime Minister of Poland, the country that currently holds the presidency of the Council of Europe, made an appeal to European leaders and beyond. Known for his strong stances, Tusk called for the relationship with the US and Trump to be as good as possible.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk pressured other European leaders to massively increase defense spending and avoid clashing with the US, as he flew to Paris for an emergency summit devoted to the future of Ukraine and European rearmament.

"I will ask the prime ministers gathered in Paris today directly, are they ready to make a serious decision?" Tusk said on the way to the rally, referring to defense spending. "Poland is unfortunately an exception to the rule in Europe at the moment. This absolutely has to change."

In comments made in Warsaw before flying to Paris, Tusk repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining a common front between Europe and the US.

"Regardless of what one has to say to each other sometimes in brutal words ... there is no reason for allies to quarrel among themselves for not finding a common language on the most important issues. That is why I will be in Paris to prevent all possible voices that would like to introduce some kind of competitive game between the European Union and the United States, because it makes no sense," Tusk said.

But with the US demanding much higher military spending from Europe and leaving no room for European countries in talks it intends to hold with Russia, Tusk underlined that the continent will have to dramatically increase its defence budgets. /CNA
