Abortion ban in the US leads to more births and infant deaths

The abortion ban in the United States is deepening existing health disparities as births increase in high-risk populations, causing mortality to increase disproportionately.

In the 14 states that implemented abortion bans after the Supreme Court struck down abortion rights, fertility rates rose, to an additional 1 birth per 1,000 women, according to a study published in the medical journal JAMA. Another study found that infant mortality rates rose nearly 6% in states that banned abortion.

With about 500 more deaths than expected among the 22,000 additional births, the infant mortality rate for births linked to the abortion ban — 24 deaths for every 1,000 births — was about four times higher than expected. Birth and death rates were analyzed from 2012 to 2023, using trends from before the restrictions were implemented and from states without restrictions as baseline measures.

Dr. Suzanne Bell, co-author of the studies, said this shows that births are occurring disproportionately among populations at higher risk of infant mortality. The largest increases in fertility rates were seen among women of color, other minorities, and those with lower socioeconomic status./ CNA
