Diplomatic meetings/ Why Saudi Arabia was chosen for talks on Ukraine

The Trump administration's choice of Saudi Arabia as the location for key talks on Ukraine is not a random choice.

On many fronts, in entertainment and sports in particular, Saudi Arabia has spent vast sums of money to advance its ambitions to be a major player on the world stage.

Diplomatically, the Saudi leadership has also increased its role.

The Saudis made it clear that they would pursue what they perceive as their own interests first and foremost, forging closer relations with countries seen as key US rivals, such as Russia and China.

Donald Trump's return to the White House was welcomed by the Saudis.

His first foreign visit in his first term was to Saudi Arabia, and the transactional nature of his foreign policy is more favorable to the current Saudi leadership.

How this is resolved will be key to the dynamic in the evolving relationship between Saudi Arabia and the US. /CNA
