Criticism of Europe/ Vice President JD Vance issues warning from conference

US Vice President JD Vance spoke at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. This year's gathering brought together right-leaning European leaders from Argentina, Britain, Poland, Hungary and Italy.

Among other things, JD Vance warned Europe:

"Of course, we will continue to have important alliances with Europe. But how strong these alliances will be will depend on whether we lead our societies in the right direction," the vice president said.

Last week, he traveled to Paris, where he called on Europe to scrap its regulations on artificial intelligence, and then to Munich, where he criticized the continent's commitment to democracy but made no mention of Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Vance's visit, his pointed criticism of European nations and Trump's moves signaling a willingness to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin, have sent the continent's leaders into a huddle as they realize they cannot navigate a possible world without American security guarantees against Russian aggression. /CNA
