Train accident in Tempi/Mass protests begin in Greece

Air, sea and rail transport have been halted and mass protests are planned in Greece today over the lack of justice, two years after the worst train accident in Tempi, which killed 57 people.

A passenger train collided with a freight train on February 28, 2023, near Tempi in central Greece. Two years later, the safety gaps that caused the collision have not been addressed. A separate judicial investigation remains unfinished and no one has been convicted for the accident.

All international and domestic flights were grounded as air traffic controllers joined sailors, train drivers, doctors, lawyers and teachers in a 24-hour general strike to honor the crash victims. Businesses were closed, theaters canceled performances and thousands were expected to take to Syntagma Square in central Athens and the streets of cities, under heavy police surveillance.

The government denies wrongdoing and says it is up to the judiciary to investigate the accident./CNA
