Suspected of involvement in energy sector corruption case/ Zelensky's

The investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) into Timur Mindich, a close associate of Volodymyr Zelensky, in a $100 million corruption case in the energy sector is causing unrest in Ukraine.

The case has also provoked reactions in the opposition, with Petro Poroshenko's party calling for the government to resign. NABU conducted a series of raids on the home and offices of Midych, a former business partner of Volodymyr Zelensky. However, he fled the country shortly before the investigation began on November 10.

Seven people have already been implicated in the case involving the state-owned nuclear power company Energoatom, which is suspected of being involved in a 10-15% kickback scheme from contractors. This is the second time that President Zelensky has been politically implicated in corruption cases.

Mindich is a co-owner of Kvartal 95, the production company that Zelensky founded when he was a popular comedian, and remains under investigation for his role in state energy contracts and drone manufacturing companies.

After Zelensky came to power, Midinch reportedly gained influence in the energy and defense sectors, and Ukrainian media have described him as a de facto oligarch with large holdings in defense and energy.

NABU alleges that several officials seized control of state-owned energy companies and orchestrated a $100 million bribery scheme involving Energoatom, the state-owned nuclear power company that produces more than 50 percent of Ukraine’s electricity.

According to the agency, a “high-level criminal organization” orchestrated the scheme, led by a businessman and involving a former adviser to the energy minister, Energoatom’s security chief and four other employees.

In a speech, Zelensky distanced himself from Midinch and the other suspects, praising the Office's work but avoiding mentioning names. /CNA
