US President Joe Biden has approved the supply of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine, a US official told Reuters.

This is seen as a step that could help Ukraine stop the advance of Russian forces in the east of the country, especially if the mines are used in conjunction with other munitions from the United States.

The United States expects Ukraine to use the mines on its own soil, although it has asked that they not be used in civilian-populated areas, the official said.

The Washington Post first reported on Biden's decision.

The United States has supplied Ukraine with anti-tank mines throughout its war with Russia, but the addition of anti-personnel mines is aimed at halting the advance of Russian infantry, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

American mines differ from Russian ones because they are "unstable" and become useless after a while, the official said. They need the battery to detonate and cannot detonate after the battery runs out.

On Tuesday, Ukraine used US long-range ATACMS missiles to launch attacks on Russian soil, using the permission given by the outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden on the 1,000th day of the war.

Moscow said the use of ATACMS, the longest-range missiles Washington has so far supplied Ukraine, is a clear sign the West wants to escalate the conflict.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin lowered the threshold for using nuclear weapons in response to a wider range of conventional attacks.

Russia has been warning the West for months that, if Washington allows Ukraine to launch American, British and French missiles deep into Russia, then Moscow will consider these NATO member states to be directly involved in the war in Ukraine. REL
