The EU will announce Ukraine's accession talks in December

The EU is preparing to open talks with Ukraine on its membership, with an official announcement expected in December, reports Politico.

Ukraine applied for membership in the bloc less than a week after Russia invaded Ukraine and EU leaders accepted Ukraine as a candidate to join the bloc.

At the time, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it was a historic moment and a "good day for Europe".

Now, sources have told Politico that leaders are preparing to give Kiev the green light to begin formal talks on joining the bloc.

The EU will first issue a progress report and after that "the political pushback will be too much for individual member states to resist," one source said.

"The working assumption is indeed that by December, the European Council will decide on the opening of negotiations," they added.

EU candidates must meet standards for the state of their economy and political sphere, including a commitment to the rule of law and other democratic principles./ CNA
