21 victims after a bus fell from the bridge in Venice

At least 21 people, including two children, have died after a bus fell from a bridge near the city of Venice in Italy.

The bus crashed into a barrier on Tuesday evening and then fell onto the train tracks in the Mestre area, which is connected to Venice via a bridge.

Among the victims are five Ukrainians, one German, and the Italian driver, said the mayor of the Mestre area, Michele Di Bari.

The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, has described the incident as a "great tragedy".

"An apocalyptic scene, I have no words", he said on social networks.

The bus is believed to have been hired to take tourists to Venice from a nearby camp.

In some reports it has been said that the bus was running on gas and when it came into contact with the current of the train tracks, it was engulfed in flames.

The exact cause of the crash is not yet known, and rescue teams are working at the scene.

At least 18 people were injured, five of them very seriously.
