White House Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday that Serbia has begun withdrawing Serbian forces along the border with Kosovo.

"Since we publicly declared that we had seen Serbian forces along the border, we have seen them begin to withdraw those forces from there. This is something positive, it will help to improve the situation. It will not eliminate tensions, but it will defuse the situation,” Mr. Kirby told reporters in Washington.

Washington's reaction to the withdrawal of Serbian military forces along the border with Kosovo comes days after the United States expressed concern about a large military buildup by Serbia along the border with Kosovo, which it said included advanced artillery, tanks and mechanized military units. The United States called this gathering "unprecedented".

Mr. Kirby said that the United States does not plan to increase the number of American peacekeeping troops in KFOR, while NATO has warned that it will increase the number of troops within its mission in Kosovo after the attack by the Serbian armed group in the northern part of the country on September 24./ VOA
