Baerbock: France and Germany "argue occasionally like an old couple"

Paris and Berlin "argue like an old couple", said the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, admitting that the two countries are "the best friends in the world", but still have disagreements on some topics, including nuclear issues.

"France and Germany are known as the best friends in the world, but we still sometimes argue like old couples," Baerbock told the French regional daily Ouest-France.

"Our societies have had different opinions about nuclear power for some time. Germany closed all nuclear power plants in April, while they are an integral part of France's energy," said the Green Party politician.

"This is a situation that Paris and Berlin must accept", said Baerbock, although, according to her, both countries believe in "carbon neutrality".

She has said that she hopes that the two countries will strengthen ties through "contacts between people, between communities and the exchange of workers across borders".

Russia's war in Ukraine last year has increased tensions between Paris and Berlin as the two countries have had differences in their positions on issues of energy, nuclear power plants and armaments./ REL
