The Catholic Church in Rome hid over 3,000 Jews from the Nazis

The Catholic Church in Rome hid more than 3,000 Jews from the Nazis during World War II, according to documents released Thursday.

The documents of the Pontifical Biblical Institute include the names of 3,600 people who have been helped by Catholic orders.

A comparison with documents from the archives of the Jewish community in Rome suggests that 3,200 of them were Jews.

The documents were compiled by Christians after the liberation of the Italian capital from the Nazis in June 1944.

They were used as a basis for study by the Italian historian Renzo de Felice in 1961, but were later considered lost for decades.

The role of the Vatican during the period of Nazism in Germany and Austria, as well as Benito Mussolini's fascism in Italy, is still considered controversial.

Pope Pius XII, who was in charge of the Holy See from 1939 to 1958, has been criticized by historians for dealing with Nazi Germany and accused of being silent during the Holocaust.

However, some other historians defend his legacy.

Pope Francis has ordered the opening of all archives from 2020.

It is considered that until the start of the Second World War, 10-15,000 Jews lived in Rome.

More than 2,000 of them were killed by Nazi troops.

The city was occupied by Nazi soldiers for nine months, until it was liberated by the so-called allied forces in June 1944./ REL
