The Kremlin confirms: Putin will not participate in the G20 summit
Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin does not plan to attend the summit of the group of 20 most industrialized countries in the world, the G20, via video link, the Kremlin said on Thursday.

According to Russian officials, Putin will not travel to New Delhi for the G20 meeting because he wants to stay in Moscow and concentrate on the war in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that instead of Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will attend the summit.

In August, Putin attended the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit held in Johannesburg, but only via video link.

He did not participate physically, due to an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court on suspicion of war crimes, after the start of Russia's war in Ukraine.

It has not been commented on whether Putin had the same concerns about the eventual trip to India.

Putin is expected to pay attention this weekend to the regional elections that will be held in Russia.

Elections will also be held in the territories occupied by Russia in Ukraine, in violation of international law.

Neither Ukraine nor most of the countries of the world recognize the elections that will be held in the occupied territories.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

President Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
