Scientists have achieved human embryo-like structures without using sperm or eggs, a new hope in research into miscarriages and birth defects but raising ethical questions, Protothema reports.
A group of researchers published their research yesterday, Wednesday, in the scientific journal "Nature" describing how they managed to create a pseudoembryo from human embryonic stem cells.
Scientists hailed the work as an "impressive" advance that could allow them to penetrate the secrets of the early days of pregnancy, when miscarriages are most common.
These results continue to fuel the debate for clearer ethical rules regarding the development of human embryo models in the laboratory.
The team of researchers, led by Palestinian Jacob Hanna of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, produced 14-day human pseudoembryos.
The researchers who conducted the research as well as other scientists insisted that the structures created should not be considered human embryos./ CNA
