German intelligence official charged with treason/ Allegedly gave Russia state

A senior German intelligence officer, Carsten L., has been charged with treason after allegedly passing state secrets to Russia.

Prosecutors believe that the official Carsten L. shared information about the war in Ukraine and the mercenary group "Wagner".

According to the BBC , it is suspected that the German official was rewarded for the information provided with approximately 400,000 euros.

According to German reports, Carsten L. is believed to have committed treason while serving as a supervisor in the department that monitored overseas telephone and Internet communications.

In addition to the official, there is also another citizen who is suspected of carrying out the duty of a courier.

Russian-born German businessman Arthur E. is accused of traveling to Moscow and passing classified intelligence information to the Russian spy agency, the FSB.

Both men are now facing charges of "treason in a particularly serious matter" by Germany's attorney general. They could face up to life in prison.

We remind you that after the invasion of Ukraine, concerns about Russian espionage in Europe have increased.

A number of countries, including the UK, Poland and Norway, have arrested or deported suspected Russian spies.

In Germany, a government official who worked for an office dealing with military equipment was arrested last month on suspicion of espionage.

Also, in October of last year, Germany's cyber security chief, Arne Schönbohm, was fired after it was assumed that he had ties to people involved with Russian intelligence services./ CNA
