Blinken on an unannounced visit to Kiev

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to arrive in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, on an unannounced visit.

There has been no official announcement of Blinken's September 6 visit, which was first reported by Ukrainian media, while a US State Department spokesman declined to comment on the matter.

But Blinken's unannounced visit is expected to take place days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sacked the defense minister and several other officials following concerns of involvement in corruption in the procurement of military equipment.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan last week met with three senior Ukrainian officials to discuss efforts to prevent wartime corruption.

In June, Ukraine launched a counteroffensive against Russian forces in the south and east of the country. Despite the counteroffensive progressing more slowly than expected, the US said last week that Ukrainian forces have made significant progress in the eastern region of Zaporizhzhia.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February of last year, the US has sent over $43 billion in military aid to Ukraine. The latest aid package from Washington was made public at the end of August.

It includes demining equipment, anti-aircraft missiles, artillery ammunition, high-mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS), and over 3 million small arms rounds./ CNA
