USA: North Korea will "pay a price" for the weapons it will give to

Arms negotiations between Russia and North Korea are actively progressing, a US official said on Tuesday, and warned North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that his country will pay a price for supplying Russia with weapons it will use. in Ukraine.

Arms supplies to Russia "will not reflect well on North Korea and they will pay a price for that in the international community," National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters at the White House.

The Kremlin said earlier on Tuesday that it had "nothing to say" about statements by US officials that Mr Kim planned to travel to Russia this month to meet with President Putin and discuss arms supplies to Moscow.

North Korean leader Kim expects arms discussions to continue, Mr. Sullivan said, including at the leadership level and "maybe even in person."

"We have continued to shrink the base of the Russian defense industry," Mr. Sullivan said, and Moscow is already "looking at every source it can find" for exports of products such as munitions.

"We will continue to call on North Korea to adhere to its public commitments not to supply Russia with weapons that will end up being used to kill Ukrainians," Mr Sullivan said.

On Monday, National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said Mr. Kim and Mr. Putin may be planning the meeting, and The New York Times quoted U.S. and allied officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, as have said that Mr. Kim plans to travel to Russia, possibly as early as next week, to meet with Mr. Putin.

Asked if he could confirm these talks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “No, I cannot. There is nothing to say."

As Russia's isolation over its war in Ukraine has widened, it has seen an ever-increasing value in North Korea, political analysts say. As for North Korea, relations with Russia have not always been as warm as during the best times of the Soviet Union, but now this country is benefiting from Moscow's clear need for allies./ VOA
