NATO has said it stands in "strong solidarity" with Romania, which has reported that parts of a possible Russian drone fell on its territory during a Russian attack in neighboring Ukraine.
"We continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in close contact with our ally Romania," NATO said in a statement Wednesday night.
Romania, a NATO member, initially rejected Ukraine's claims that Iranian-made Russian drones fell and exploded on Romanian territory during an attack on the Ukrainian port of Izmail on Sunday night.
Romania's president, Klaus Iohannis, then called for an urgent investigation into the apparent remains of drones discovered on its soil after the Russian strikes.
The discovery was made near Plauru, a village on the other side of the Danube from the Ukrainian port of Izmail. The ministry said technical analysis will now be carried out to "determine the origin and characteristics" of the waste.
As a member of NATO, Romania enjoys the protection of Article 5 of the alliance's constitution, according to which an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all. However, Article 5 has only been used once, after the mass terrorist attack of September 11 in the United States./ CNA
