UN chief: Global family is "dysfunctional"
The head of the UN, Antonio Guterres

The head of the UN, Antonio Guterres, said on Friday that the world faces the risk of conflicts, as divisions between countries are growing.

He made this warning shortly before the start of the summit of the group of 20 most industrialized countries - G20.

"If we are a global family - today we resemble a dysfunctional one," Guterres told reporters in New Delhi.

"Divisions are growing, tensions are worsening and trust is disappearing - all of which increase the possibilities for division or even confrontation."

The G20 currently consists of 19 countries and the European Union, and as such accounts for two-thirds of the global population.

But major disagreements over Russia's war in Ukraine and ideas on how to fight climate change are expected to prevent any agreement being reached at the two-day meeting of leaders in New Delhi.

"These divisions would be a great concern even in the best of times, but in our case they mean disaster," said Guterres.

"The global financial architecture is outdated, dysfunctional and unfair. It requires deep structural reform - the same can be said for the United Nations Security Council."

Chinese leader Xi Jinping will not attend the summit at a time of heightened trade and geopolitical tensions with the United States and India.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who faces international arrest warrants under suspicion of war crimes, will not participate in the summit either, after the start of Russia's war in Ukraine./ REL
