The United States is moving its troops from a military base in Niger's capital Naimej — where officials seized power in a coup in July — to another base in Agedez, the Pentagon said Thursday.

The US Department of Defense "is repositioning personnel and some of the assets from the 101st Air Base in Naimej to the 201st Air Base in Agadez," said the Pentagon's deputy press secretary, Sabrina Singh.

"There is no threat to American personnel or violence in the field", she said, describing the decision as a "precautionary measure".

Singh said that "a part of the personnel that was not necessary" left the state a few weeks ago.

The President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, was overthrown from power on July 26 by some members of his guard and has been arrested since then along with his family.

Despite being one of the poorest countries in the world, Nigeria is the world's seventh largest producer of uranium, a key material for powering nuclear power plants and treating cancer.

The United States, France, Germany and Italy have military troops stationed in this country, as part of the war against Islamists in the Sahel region./ REL
