Trump may seek to move the Georgia election lawsuit to federal court

Donald Trump may file a motion to move the Georgia criminal suit accusing him of conspiring to overturn the 2020 presidential election from a state court to a federal court, according to a document filed in court on Thursday.

The former US president and front-runner to receive the Republican party's nomination as its 2024 presidential candidate was indicted along with 18 other Republicans in August on charges that he pressured Georgia state election officials to overturned the victory of Democratic President Joe Biden in this state.

The federal court would be a more favorable institution for Mr. Trump because he would face a more politically diverse jury than the one in Fulton County, Georgia, which is a Democratic stronghold.

A federal trial would also allow him to argue that he was immune from prosecution for actions he took in the course of his official duties as president.

Some of the defendants in the case against Mr. Trump, including his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, have already filed requests to move the cases against them to other courts.

A judge is expected to decide on these requests in the coming weeks./ VOA
