The head of the group of opposition councilors in the municipality of Tirana, Ilir Alimehmeti, has spoken about the affairs that have involved in scandal and corruption the directors of the mayor Erion Veliaj, who are behind bars.

In a TV appearance, Alimehmti said that since Veliaj claims that the jobs in the municipality were done by others, then an external audit should be done to show what happened with the finances.

"In a country where all the complaints they (internationals) make, we are at the bottom for the good things and the first for the bad things.

Only those who at the level of corruption, or what level of democracy we are, apparently come here with other goals, that is, to have a good time, in a country that is not in the big focus of the internationals and they don't see 1 million people fleeing from here, they don't see corruption as a movement or drugs, so they don't see anything.

They don't even see that part of how the papers are going, because at least they should see the papers despite the fact that we have informed them.

This to a certain extent shows that we are on the right track, diplomacy cannot go against people, as politics in some form is based on people.

We have a population both outside Tirana and outside the borders that have their eyes on this.

When the population sees that their elected officials are not performing their functions, then they will react and this is an escalation depending on the situation.

If Veliaj thinks that others did the work in the municipality, even this naive person has no idea what happened to him, then an external audit with skilled experts should tell us what happened to the finances, and it will be he's the first one happy and we'll pat him on the back, but I doubt he's innocent.

This is the reason why he refuses to do this, as he is afraid of even a single letter," said Alimehmeti. / CNA
