The European Commission has reacted today regarding the amendment to the Criminal Code proposed by the government regarding the suspension of ministers.

In its response, the EC says that Parliament has a responsibility to address without delay requests for the lifting of the immunity of its members.

The Commission states that the accountability and efficiency of the judiciary are essential for the EU enlargement process.

The EU is closely following the proposed amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code presented on 16 February.

The EU monitors and assesses any legislative initiatives related to the judiciary in all candidate countries, including Albania. These initiatives must be in line with the EU acquis and European standards.

This includes the implementation of the 2016 justice reform in the context of Albania's EU accession negotiations. The rule of law, independence, accountability and efficiency of the judiciary in Albania are fundamental elements of the EU enlargement process.

Rhetoric that sows public distrust in the judiciary, in the independence, impartiality, and integrity of the judicial and prosecutorial systems is counterproductive.

As already stated, it is the responsibility of the Albanian Parliament to address without delay the requests for lifting the immunity of its members. Effectively fighting corruption is of great importance for Albania's progress towards EU membership./CNA
