Journalist Isa Myzyraj, also an activist for human rights, was threatened with his life on Tuesday through an email to his email address and the official address of the television where he works, Ora News.

The sender appears to be a foreign name, which, according to Myzyraj, makes the author more suspicious and unidentifiable.

"I cannot say exactly where this threat came from. What I am sure of is that this was done because of my work as a journalist, but also as an activist," Myzyraj told BIRN.

In addition to the threat, the text contains hateful, anti-Semitic and homophobic language.

"The e-mail was also addressed to my employers, which makes me suspect that this threat is related to my work," said Myzyraj, mentioning that the media where he works immediately contacted him offering support.

According to Myzyraj, this threat also comes as a result of disinformation campaigns by radical anti-Semitic and anti-LGBT groups that have circulated in the Albanian media.

The Network for Safe Journalists in the Western Balkans, "SafeJournalist", expressed solidarity with Myzyraj, expressing concern about this case which attacks not only the journalist in question, but also the freedom of the media.

"Safe Journalist expresses deep concern about this unprecedented case, which strongly attacks the freedom of the media as well as the personal and professional integrity of the journalist Myzyraj", declared SafeJournalists.

The Safe Journalists Network also finds it disturbing that the message contains dangerous anti-Semitic language, but also unacceptable narratives based on sexual orientation.

Myzyraj told BIRN that in consultation with his lawyer, they decided that he will make the report to the law enforcement bodies within Wednesday. / BIRN
