34 years ago, on July 2, 1990, Albanians were able to overcome their fear and learn in foreign embassies. Thus they left their mark, creating what is today called the great exodus of Albanians. 

The entry into the embassies was the last blow to the Political Bureau regime in Albania, opening the door to freedom for thousands of people. Albanians flocked to the embassies of the EU countries in the hope of finding the freedom that had been missing for more than 40 years. 

This movement was followed a few months later by student protests and the start of political pluralism.

The statistics showed that only in the first 2 weeks of July, 4,691 people left. Thus, 550 people who had entered the French embassy, ??3300 people who had entered the German embassy, ??812 people who had entered the Italian embassy, ??and 29 people who had entered the Greek embassy left. The ships were waiting for them in Durrës, while the departure took place in the evening, just before 10 pm, to avoid the presence of many people on the road.

All the people who crossed the walls of the embassies experienced very difficult moments, because they were separated from their relatives without knowing for how long and without knowing what their fate would be.

There were even those who were pressured by their family members not to enter the embassies. 

The entry into the embassies can now be described as the most powerful act of the revolt of the youth of Tirana in 1990 against the most isolated regime in Eastern Europe./ CNA
