Businesses in various sectors of the economy are once again turning their eyes to foreign countries for finding a workforce. Emigration and the aging of the population over the years continues to increase the gap in finding employees.

Initially, it was attempted with employees mainly from Bangladesh, a scheme which failed as they saw Albania more as a springboard to move to Europe. India is now being seen as a source for finding employees.

Large and medium-sized farms are also in a difficult situation for employees. In addition to offering salaries of up to 1,000 euros per month per stallier, farm managers are looking for employees from India.

Klajdi Myzaferi, the manager of a farm with 150 cows in Vlora, since November 2023 has employed 2 Indians who pay him 500 USD per month including paid accommodation and food, and give bonuses for extra work.

"I am satisfied with the work performance, especially with the stability, which we are not encountering with local employees. They have also started to adapt to the automated processes of the farm".

He is expected to add 2 or 3 workers from India soon.

"There is no continuity in the local power. There are no young people who want to work in livestock, they leave to emigrate. There is a labor force over the age of 55, but they are unable to cope with difficult work in animal husbandry, "he said.

Myzaferi adds that the salaries for local employees in the position of a stableman vary from 700 to 1,500 euros per month. While during the summer period, payments for transport workers reach up to 2,000 euros per month.

Two foreign workers with Indian citizenship are expected to be employed in another farm with 60 cows in the Fern area. According to the contract signed by the head of the farm with the recruitment company, the salary for foreign workers will be 600 euros per month.

But the expert of agriculture and animal husbandry Ervin Resuli does not see the employment of foreign citizens as an option, not only because of yield and sustainability, but because of the crisis in the animal husbandry sector. Including the lack of employees, according to him, this will very soon bring to the livestock industry a high decrease in the number of large and small farms and the number of heads of cattle.

He says that in this situation it is very necessary for state institutions to increase subsidies for the livestock sector in order to increase competitiveness compared to the region.

According to him, the difference in granting subsidies is high compared to the region. For example, in Kosovo, the subsidy for goats is 30 euros per head, while in Albania it is 1,200 lek or 12 euros per head for a herd of 100 to 300 goats.

The latest INSTAT data showed that during 2023, the number of livestock decreased by over 11 percent in each category, cattle, goats and sheep. In 2023, there were 263 thousand cattle in the whole country with an annual decrease of 11.5%

While the number of small items decreased by 11.7%. The number of pigs also decreased by 16%. Only poultry and beehives grew by 2.6 and 8.2% each./Monitor
