The greatest contemporary Albanian writer, Ismail Kadare, was born in Gjirokastër on January 28, 1936. He was an academic and a politician, but he will be remembered as one of the greatest contemporary writers.

Kadare is famous for his prose, but he also made a great contribution in poetry, dramaturgy and translations.

Ismail Kadare is the author of many works in poetry and prose, laureate of many national and international awards, several times a candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literature, member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania and Member of the French Academy of Moral Sciences.

Kadare's work has been translated into about 45 foreign languages, thus reaching a record of distribution throughout the world.

Ismail Kadare is the laureate of many national and international literary awards. In 1992 he was awarded the Prix Mondial Cino Del Duca. In 2005 he won the "Man Booker International Prize" where he was nominated together with other great writers, including Nobel laureates such as Günter Grass, Garbiel Garcia Marquez, Kenzaburo Oe, etc.

In 2009 he was awarded the Spanish Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts - the most important literary award in the Spanish countries, and one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world. In 2010, Ismail Kadare was honored in Italy with the Lerici Pea award.

Ismail Kadare has been decorated by the institution of the President of the Republic of Albania with the Order "Honour of the Nation" and by the French state with the orders "Cross of the Legion of Honor" and "Officer of the Legion of Honor", inform the media in Albania./ DW
