Scientists warn: Hantavirus outbreak also poses a risk for environmental

A deadly outbreak of a rare hantavirus aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic has led experts to warn that tourists could inadvertently contaminate highly fragile ecosystems.

Hantavirus has been confirmed to have killed three people aboard the MV Hondius, a cruise ship that departed from Argentina on April 1 and visited Antarctica and several isolated islands.

The ship has been at the center of an international health scare since Saturday after it was discovered that the rare disease, which is generally spread by infected rodents.

Experts warn that with more visitors comes an increased risk of contamination, disease and other harm to the continent.

While visitor numbers are still small, partly due to the high costs and time it can take, they are growing so fast that scientists and environmentalists are sounding the alarm.
